The Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) Examination is a state-level competitive exam conducted by the BPSC to recruit officers for various administrative positions in the Bihar state government. It is similar to the UPSC Civil Services Examination but focuses on Bihar’s governance, history, and socio-economic conditions.

BPSC Examination Overview

  • Purpose
To recruit candidates for various Group A and B posts in Bihar’s administrative services, including:
    • Bihar Administrative Service (BAS)
    • Bihar Police Service (BPS)
    • Bihar Revenue Service (BRS)
    • Bihar Financial Service (BFS)
    • Other allied services
  • Eligibility Criteria
    • Nationality: Indian
    • Age Limit: Generally 20-37 years (varies by category and post)
    • Educational Qualification: A graduate degree from a recognized university is required

BPSC Exam Pattern

The BPSC exam consists of three stages:

  1. Preliminary Examination (Prelims)
    • Objective Type (MCQs)
    • Total Marks: 150
    • Subjects:
      • General Studies (History, Geography, Polity, Economy, Science, Current Affairs)
    • Duration: 2 hours
    • No negative marking
  2. Main Examination (Mains)
    • Descriptive/Subjective Type
    • Total Marks: 900
    • Subjects:
      • General Hindi (Qualifying) – 100 marks
      • General Studies Paper I – 300 marks
      • General Studies Paper II – 300 marks
      • Optional Subject – 300 marks
    • Duration: 3 hours per paper
  3. Interview (Personality Test)
    • Total Marks: 120
    • Candidates who qualify for the Mains are called for the Interview round, which assesses personality, communication skills, and knowledge of Bihar-related issues.
